This article analyses a series of themes discussed at Trust Board meetings of three hospitals with a view to assessing the extent of the input the Boards’ have in the areas of accountability and strategy with respect to their respective hospitals. Inevitably, there exists a degree of subjectivity in the observation of the respective Trust Board meetings. However, observation coupled with in-depth, follow-up individual interviews undertaken, and which will form the basis of a subsequent article, do give credence to the points being made and the opinions expressed.
